Grouped in teams, students will workshop, organize, film and edit a short documentary film. Students will be exposed to various professionals in the field who will help guide them through the concept, pre-production and post-production phases of documentary filmmaking. Course Materials: Although camera, lighting and sound equipment will be provided, students may be required to view various documentaries on their own which may include movie tickets or rental fees. Conduct: Above and beyond the expected conduct outline in the SMA student handbook, students are expected to be respectful of loaned equipment. Students are responsible for checking out the equipment and returning it in the same condition. A NOTE ON COMMITMENT: Much of this class is hands-on learning. The time that we spend in class will be used to discuss, explore and practice the skills learned in class. There is an extra time commitment that will need to be made outside of class for shooting, capturing and editing your footage. The deadlines for finishing your projects (especially your final project) are strict. There will be no time to scramble or “cram” for this. Course Procedures: If you are going to be late, please try to call someone. Show up to schedule meeting times with your group. When you check equipment or DVDs out, you are accepting full and financial responsibility for the equipment, even in cases of accidents. Equipment checkout needs to occur at the designated time. All other equipment needs will be fulfilled at The equipment is for use by you and your teammates for your film class project. All other uses by yourself and others are prohibited Skip TIMELINE: subject to change/modification Pre-Production WEEK #1 September 26 -What is documentary? Show short doc clips. -Break into groups: shoot introductions using interview techniques. -Introductory discussion to topic development. What makes a solid doc topic? How do we brainstorm doc ideas? Start collecting doc ideas. Homework: 1) Bring items for diary docs. 2) Bring three additional topic ideas WEEK #2 October 3 -Short mini lesson on camera angels -Shoot/View Diary Docs with camera angles -Continue doc topic discussion. Write topics on chart paper to finalize the following week. Homework: 1) Choose two topics that you would be happy working on for your doc based on the class discussion. 2) Prepare a one-page summary of ideas about how you will create a doc based on these topics (half a page for each idea.) WEEK #3 October 10 NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY 9…WE WILL HAVE CLASS -Finalize topics and production teams -Teams meet to begin pre-pro for first shoot Homework: 1) Write our pre-pro ideas to be turned in next week. Students can not begin shooting without pre-pro work complete. 2) Plan for your first shoot which you will conduct during class next week. Production WEEK #4 October 17 -Discuss equipment protocol for class and equipment instruction Homework: 1) Organize and shoot interviews and b-roll for films. WEEK #5 October 24 -Show doc film clips about shooting & editing styles. Discuss. Homework: 1) Organize and shoot interviews and b-roll for films. All major interviews should be scheduled by next week. WEEK #6 October 31 -View dailies - Final class day for shooting. All other shooting must be completed outside of class time. Homework: 1) Continue shooting interviews and b-roll as needed. Post- Production WEEK #7 November 7 - Begin editing discussion. Show some short doc clips to assist discussion - Teach log & capture. Homework: 1) Work on log and capture for next week. 2) Complete shooting of all major interviews. WEEK #8 November 14 – -Students will create a paper edit of their doc. They can begin this during class. Students will not be able to work on their final cut timeline until they complete paper edit. -Continue log and capture Homework: 1) finish paper edit. 2) Finish shooting b-roll as needed. 3) Continue log and capture. WEEK #9 November 21 -Begin rough cuts on final cut timeline -Log and capture and shooting must be completed this week Homework: 1) Finish rough cut for viewing next week. THANKSGIVING WEEKEND THE 30TH NO CLASS…WE WILL NOT HAVE CLASS THIS DAY! WEEK #10 December 5th -Show all student rough cuts in process, -Class critique, -Begin work on final edit Homework: 1) Work on final edit WEEK #11 December 12th -Continue work on final edit, -Teach transitions, titles, adjusting sound Homework: 1) Work on final edit DECEMBER 19TH – JANUARY 3RD – WINTER BREAK.
